Develop a story in your organization to share with colleagues that help explain issues that need to be addressed

An issue need to be addressed in my organization is that our college head is going to save budget in various areas, one of the approaches is to save expenditure of the programme such as cutting the making assignment fee of the part time lecturers by changing the format of the assignment from essays to MC questions and short questions.  In this way, the assignments are marked by the computer and we only need to pay one setting assignment fee to the lecturers. 

As a result, the salaries of the lecturers will decrease and the college may face losing the lecturers by hiring from the competitors.  Besides, we may need to put more focus on how to maintain the quality of the questions which can prove the students are familiar with the course content and are well-educated as well as well-qualified to entry the highest level in their study path.  In this way, the quality of the programme may affect badly and the profits of the programme may, therefore, diminish.

It is worth for the head to think about the pros and cons for launching this projects in the long run.

    I like your story. Enrollments are down so they cut back services, as a result the college is less attractive so enrollment drop more, so they cut back services more ... a spiral decline. I'd be interested to know of the decision makers had sought advice from others - looked for another option to save money or increase enrollments?

    A few weeks ago, Bob had a slide relating to Professional Development that said the people in an institution are a 'key institutional asset'. I think your college could take this further and draw on their experience to find suggestions, or even better, invest in them through training development and empowerment as a way of boosting their own abilities and thus drawing more student enrollment.

  2. Tammy thanks for your sharing! I realize that cost cutting is a major concern nowadays which is a post-financial crisis period. 6328 allowed us to think more about scenario thinking which is beneficial for us dealing this kind of situation in future. In my opinions, you may try to analyze the disadvantages of cutting cost to your boss. It may be it would bring a bad consequence to teaching performance and lower the teaching quality. I think your boss would consider it and adjust his mind on it

  3. Cutting cost is one of the way to make management group meet their annual target and sometimes they are very difficult to avoid doing this. One of the way to facing it is to keep focusing on self improvement and make the others know it is worth to putting money on our team.

  4. Hi Tammy. Decreasing the salary is merely one of the many ways save money. I agree with you that the head needs to think thoroughly before it is to be implemented.
